I rarely use the search engine, especially as it feels like, and is now seeming to be, a massive downgrade over XP's, but I still need it from time to time and I'd rather not have to index my whole PC simply because Windows 7 refuses to search non-indexed sections of my hard drives as it's a waste of system resources given how little I need to use it.

Open the Indexing Options panel, choose Advanced, and click the [ Rebuild ] button, which is supposed to Delete and rebuild index. With the indexing service off, I could imagine it would delete whatever vestiges of an index you might have but not rebuild it.
Perhaps that will trigger honest to goodness "search the damned disk already" operation. I did go through that process when I disabled indexing, and I can actually search and find things. Keep up hope; it can work. This thread is locked.
