Since GPT disks can have multiple primary partitions as you like, it is no big deal to have one or more extra small partitions on a GPT disk, but things will be different for MBR disks, because you can have at most 4 primary partitions on a MBR disk. Otherwise, for those people who want to install multiple OS on one MBR drive, the 4 primary partitions are really precious.
Besides, you can only have three primary partitions if you have logical partition s on the same disk. Therefore, to make full use of the primary partitions is to allow Windows to be installed into one partition without generating a system reserved partition or system recovery partition.
The only way to prevent Windows from creating another partition is to partition hard drive before installing. Windows build-in tool, Disk Management or Diskpart. Disk Management can only be used when OS has been successfully loaded, so you can use Disk Management to create a new partition for another OS if you already have windows installed.
Restart your computer. Since BIOS settings vary based on make and model, contact your motherboard's manufacturer or check your computer's manual if you are not sure how to access or configure your BIOS. All the bootdisk talk above is how you can do the first stuff, but frankly its ugly, and 5 years ago using a 98 disk was a decent solution, now it will work, but its a pain. You could get gparted, and try to boot from that. But if you can't boot from a real XP disk I doubt you can boot from gparted.
If you do boot off of gparted then you can shrink your current partition and create a new one in the free space and then maybe launch the XP install from within Windows. I think the bottom line here is either you've set your BIOS incorrectly, or you don't have a legit XP disk, and we aren't going to be guiding you through the process of installing XP if its not a legal copy.
